Colourful session

A quick and dirty report this week on last week's session I'm afraid because there's a lot going on at home for this scribe. Don't worry, nothing bad, just a bit hectic.

We assembled as a perfectly respectable eight singers and Colin was back from his holidays, so he took back the club accoutrements and the mantle of MC for the evening.

Miraculously, Simon had turned up first and so got to sing first, giving us Dave Sudbury's King Of Rome. Colin, freshly inspired no doubt by a visit to Sidmouth Folk Week, sang The Reason I Left Mullingar (Pat Cooksey).


Phil sang Jimmy Brown The Newsboy Of The Town (AP Carter).

Mike's singing of The Scarlet and the Blue (Roud 163) inspired Derek to propose a theme of colours which several people managed to follow but first we had a memorial from Geoff to the recently departed Glen Campbell with his song Wichita Lineman (Jimmy Webb).

So now we get down to colours. I will no doubt miss some  but here's an attempt at a list:

• Chris - My Love Doesn't Love Me At All - "bluebird" (but I can't track down Chris's version)
• Derek - Orange and Blue (Roud 567, Laws P31)
• Mike - Black, White, Yellow And Green (Roud 9212)
• Geoff - The Galway Races - "the pinks, the blues, the Irisher green" (Noel McLoughlin)
• Derek - Cyfri'r Geifr - various colours in Welsh (goat counting song)
• Mike - started the White Cockade and then sang the Green Cockade which is similar but without the chorus (Roud 191)
• Chris - Barbara Allen - "In Scarlet town" (Roud 407) - Scarlet town may be a reference to Reading, Berkshire, UK

Roger finished off the evening in fine style allowing everyone to sing along with Jerusalem (William Blake).
